Columbia University was founded in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of King George II of England. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in the state of New York and the fifth oldest in the United States. From its beginnings in a schoolhouse in lower Manhattan, Columbia University has grown to encompass two principal campuses: the historic, neoclassical campus in the Morningside Heights neighborhood and the modern Medical Center further uptown, in Washington Heights. Today, Columbia is one of the top academic and research institutions in the world, conducting pathbreaking research in medicine, science, the arts, and the humanities. It includes three undergraduate schools, thirteen graduate and professional schools, and a school of continuing education. Undergraduate education at Columbia is offered through Columbia College, the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of General Studies. Undergraduate programs are offered by two affiliated institutions, Barnard College and Jewish Theological Seminary. Columbia University provides post-graduate education through thirteen graduate and professional schools and a school of continuing education. Three affiliated schools also offer post-graduate programs. Columbia University has more than a hundred departments of research and more than a hundred research institutes and centers. At Columbia University, financial aid is available for foreign students, but candidates should be aware that their applications are read in a more selective process than are other candidates. If you plan on applying for financial at any point during your four years of study then you must apply for financial aid at the time you apply for admission. A student can apply for financial aid through the Early Decision, Regular Decision, Continuing, Transfer or Combined Plan program. There are no academic, athletic or talent-based institutional scholarships at Columbia as all of our institutional financial aid is need-based. Our students are often the recipients of merit-based scholarships from outside organizations (state grants/scholarships, local/national merit-based awards, etc.); however, no merit-based aid is offered directly from Columbia University.
